How Often Should You Update Your Digital Estate Plan

Estate

A good rule of thumb: review it once a year, and update it any time something changes.

Things that should trigger an update outside your annual review:

•You open or close a major account (new bank, new crypto wallet, closed social media)

•Your designated digital executor changes — a falling out, a move, a death

•A platform changes its legacy tools (features get added or discontinued fairly often)

•A major life event: marriage, divorce, a new child, a new business

Set a recurring reminder — many people tie it to something they already do annually, like renewing insurance or filing taxes, so it doesn’t get forgotten. A plan that’s five years stale is often worse than no plan at all, since an executor may follow outdated instructions or wastetime on an account you closed long ago.
